Nature’s Palette: Capturing Minnesota’s Wildlife

Chickadee, Rebecca Latham, Opaque & transparent watercolor on museum board

Minnesota’s wilderness is more than just a backdrop—it is a thriving world of creatures adapting, surviving, and interacting in ways that shape the experience of being in nature. From the quiet rustling of deer moving through the underbrush to the sharp cry of a hawk soaring overhead, every moment spent in the wild is an opportunity to witness the life within the landscape.

The Influence of Wildlife on Artistic Growth
Growing up surrounded by Minnesota’s diverse wildlife shaped my artistic journey in ways I didn’t fully appreciate until later. The animals I observed weren’t just subjects for paintings—they were teachers, revealing the subtleties of movement, expression, and presence.

A fox pausing to listen, a chickadee adjusting its feathers against the cold, the silent patience of a hunting owl—these moments became the foundation of my work. They taught me to see beyond the surface, to understand the personalities and behaviors of each species, and to translate that understanding into art.

Experiencing Wildlife Firsthand
Spending time in nature is essential to my process. Whether hiking through the woods, watching birds at dawn, or quietly observing a family of deer, these experiences provide more than reference material—they create a connection.

Fieldwork allows me to witness the interactions between species, the way animals respond to seasonal changes, and the quiet intelligence in their movements. It’s not just about capturing an image—it’s about understanding the story behind the moment, the way an animal fits into its environment, and the emotions it conveys through posture, gaze, and action.

Painting the Experience of the Wild
When I paint, I strive to bring that experience to life—not just the visual details, but the feeling of being there. The crisp air of a winter morning, the golden glow of autumn light filtering through the trees, the quiet anticipation of watching a predator stalk its prey—these elements shape the atmosphere of a painting, making it more than just a representation.

Minnesota’s wildlife has been a constant source of inspiration, not just for its beauty, but for the stories it tells. Through my paintings, I hope to share those stories, inviting viewers to step into the world of the creatures that call this place home.
