Timeless Refuge – American Kestrels, 11×14, Opaque & transparent watercolor on museum board, Rebecca Latham
I’m honored to share that my painting Timeless Refuge – American Kestrels has been accepted into the Spokane Watercolor Society’s 2026 National Show, hosted at the Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane, Washington. The exhibition will be on view May 8 – June 14, 2026.
This piece, painted in opaque and transparent watercolor on museum board (11 × 14 inches), holds a special place in my heart. It portrays a quiet moment of safety and stillness—two kestrels finding calm harbor amidst the openness of their world. I was drawn to the balance they embody: alert yet at rest, fragile yet steadfast. The play of light across their feathers and the warmth of their surroundings became a meditation on what “refuge” means—both for wildlife and for us.
Working in watercolor for this piece allowed me to layer transparency and opacity in ways that mirror that delicate coexistence between strength and vulnerability. The process was slow and mindful, each wash building upon the last until that sense of calm resilience began to take form.
Being included in the Spokane Watercolor Society’s National Exhibition is truly humbling. The Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane has long been a place that celebrates the depth and diversity of watercolor as a medium, and I’m so grateful for this opportunity to share space with so many talented artists.
For those who will be in Spokane this spring, I hope you’ll have the chance to visit the exhibition. It’s always inspiring to see the language of watercolor expressed through so many different voices—an affirmation that beauty and storytelling continue to thrive through this timeless medium.
Thank you, as always, for sharing in the journey and for the kindness so many of you show toward my work.
