I hope everyone’s New Year has started off well! Minnesota has dropped into the deep freeze for the time being, so I am doing more painting than wildlife watching until it warms up to above zero at least. The deer and winter birds have been visiting regularly, though.

I am busy finishing off a stack of pieces for some upcoming shows and commissions. This black wolf will be headed to Seaside Art Gallery for the Animals In Art Show In February. I just loved painting in all those color blends in the fur. I’m almost sad to see it finished. You can check over on my events page as new venues are added for the coming season.

Your work is so beautiful. I also paint in watercolor but just for my own pleasure. Can you tell me how you apply the light areas of hair or feathers to your painting. When I use Titanium white and paint light areas, they fade into the paper or just don’t look solid. Also I see you paint on board. Can you explain please. I stretch my watercolor paper onto gator board. Thanks for sharing your work.

Thank you, Susan. You may want to try using less water or look into other brands than what you’re using. A gouache would usually give you the best coverage. Hope that helps!
